This is a question I get asked all the time. Most of the time, I can think of an answer that fits. I think the answer is “about three times the length of a basketball.” The point of this is so that the answer isn’t obvious.
The answer is a little higher than we usually associate with Chinese food. It certainly has a much lower cholesterol count than other foods, and it has a very low saturated fat count. So it’s a great food to have in your diet.
If you are worried about having enough calories to make sure you are getting the right amount of nutrients, then you should probably avoid eating any meat. Most meat is high in saturated fats, so you may as well go the whole hog and get the fatty meat. For those who are wondering, fried chicken and sausages are actually relatively low in saturated fats.
So how did we end up with a bunch of chicken and sausages? Well, when you have a diet where you eat only fat-free food, then you get a lot of meat in the form of sausages. What’s more, sausages are high in saturated fat, so if you are trying to avoid butter and cream, you’d be better off eating sausages, too.
If you are eating only fat-free diet, then you may as well get into a sausages party. As it turns out, sausages are actually very low in saturated fats and high in monounsaturated fats, the two main healthy fats that are associated with heart health. Monounsaturated fats can increase your HDL (good) cholesterol, which may help lower your risk of heart disease.
You might not realize it, but sausages contain a lot of saturated fat. That is why sausages are so rich in heart-friendly monounsaturated fats. They are also rich in dietary fiber, which is great for losing water. Fiber helps keep you hydrated while you eat the sausages.
I’ve always been a fan of healthy sausages, but the high saturated fat content has been a bit of a headache.
